Request for Proposals - Diesel biofuels & heavy Duty vehicle internal combustion engine
29 October 2010
29th October 2010
The closing date to submit was 26 November 2010. This RfP has now closed.
A Request for Proposals has been issued today (29 October) for a project which aims to be a catalyst for building strong fuel developer-engine producer interaction to produce the best possible fuel-engine system for greatest CO2 reduction.
The development of these advanced diesel bio-fuels offers the potential to explore optimised engine and fuel combinations in a way that has not been possible before.
Vehicles based on internal combustion (IC) engines account for 15% of UK GHG emissions, with diesel engines accounting for close to 10% of UK GHG emissions. For heavy duty vehicles in particular there appears to be no “silver bullet” in terms of battery technology, with liquid fuels likely to remain a vital component going forward.
There are currently a number of pathways to liquid diesel bio-fuels under exploration with no clear winners arising yet. Historically, the development of first generation diesel bio-fuels (FAME, etc) occurred with little interaction between fuel producers and engine manufacturers, and without necessarily having CO2 reduction as the primary goal of the bio-fuel.
Hence the current landscape of RD&D in diesel bio-fuels development is limited by focussing on diesel bio-fuels pathways that will fit into the current generation of fuel grades (e.g. EN590, EN228) and existing engine technologies. By broadening the scope of existing fuel standards to encompass a wider range of fuel properties it may be possible to develop bio-fuels that optimise engine performance whilst minimising GHG emissions. While there is much work being undertaken on developing diesel bio-fuels pathways by a number of parties globally, this project aims to assess in a holistic manner a broad range of potential bio-fuels options and publish its output into the public domain.
As a second follow on stage we are looking at announcing a light duty version of this project during 2011.
The deadline for notification of intention to submit a proposal is the 12 November 2010.
The closing date to submit a proposal is the 26 November 2010.
