ETI appoints Baringa Partners to help develop EnergyPath software tool to design cost-effective local energy systems for the UK
• ETI appoints Baringa Partners to design and develop new modelling tool
• Baringa appoints Element Energy, Hitachi and University College London to help them with project
• The project is valued at £1.1m
The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has appointed energy consultancy Baringa Partners to design and develop a software modelling tool to be used in the planning of cost-effective local energy systems. This software will be called EnergyPath.
EnergyPath will play a key role in the ETI’s Smart Systems and Heat Programme, which will create and demonstrate the capability to provide practical cost-effective solutions for energy efficient heat and comfort in homes and businesses throughout the UK.
Baringa Partners, recently awarded Energy Risk Consultancy Firm of the Year, has appointed Element Energy, Hitachi and University College London to work with them to develop the software, as well as engaging expert input from Western Power Distribution and Ramboll.
The £1.1m project will see Baringa Partners develop EnergyPath, with input from a range of local authorities including Aberdeen, Bridgend, Cornwall, Greater London Authority (including Camden, Haringey and Islington), Hull, Isle of Wight, Leeds, Leicester, Greater Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.
Grant Bourhill, Director, Smart Systems and Heat at the ETI, said: “EnergyPath is the next major step on our journey to build a comprehensive energy design capability. Through EnergyPath, we will work with local authorities and other key organisations to develop practical, cost-effective local energy system designs, that provide benefit to residents while helping contribute to the UK’s energy and climate change goals.”
The EnergyPath local design tool will complement the ETI’s internationally peer-reviewed Energy System Modelling Environment (ESME) software tool, which is a national strategic energy system tool that links heat, power, transport and the infrastructure that connects them. Redpoint Energy, now part of Baringa Partners, has supported the ETI in the design and development of the ESME tool.
Oliver Rix, Partner with Baringa, added: “EnergyPath promises to be an exciting development in the ability to inform the design of local energy systems. We’ve been privileged to work with the ETI on the evolution of ESME, and we look forward to continuing the journey with the ETI and others in helping to deliver this key new component of the energy system modelling landscape over the coming months ahead.”
